“Everybody ought to know who Jesus is!”, says a chorus in a song. Each of us believers ought to tell of this wondrous story, how a Savior came from glory to save sinful man. Evangelism is not simply getting people to change their beliefs and accept ours. Sometimes we are so passionate about our religion and so forth.
As we draw close to our Missions Emphasis month – this September; and commit ourselves by faith in sending forth the Gospel light we must come to realise that the work of spreading the Gospel is endowed on each one of us. You and I! Mark Dever in the 9 Marks says,
Christians often leave evangelism to “the professionals” out of a sense of inadequacy, apathy, ignorance, fear, or simply feeling that it is inappropriate for them to do it. Perhaps they are not so sure of what evangelism entails and how it is to be done. And this situation is tragic. I am convinced that one of the distinguishing marks of a healthy church is a biblical understanding and practice of evangelism.
Reaching out for the lost with the Gospel is not the work of the pastor, deacons and our missionaries – “the professionals”. We must realise that Jesus left us believers - the task of going out and make disciples. We are to be witnesses of what Jesus did for us on the cross.
1 Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures…”
Pauls shares what he received! He shares the Gospel that brought him salvation – the essence of his message was on the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ for our sins, his burial and resurrection. Jesus paid it all, the debt for our sins. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.( Romans 3:23) Yet our God is Love full of mercy and desires our salvation! But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us.(Ephesians 2:4) Jesus today lives in heart of every believer! We must share this message!
The Lord desires that all should repent!
2Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
